All water contains dissolved minerals.  When in solution, water seperates into negatively charged anions, and its counterpart, positively charged cations.  A process known as deionization can substantial reduce the quantity of these ions to a very low level.

Because the deionization process is so effective, the quality of the water is customarily measured by the water's resistance to electric current.  The quality of deionized water depends on several factors: existing water composition, types of resin and amount, and last but not least, the number of tanks utilized in the system.  Typically, a mixed bed deionization system produces water with greater than 10,000,000 Ohm-cm resistance, which is equal to less than 0.05 milligrams per liter (mg/L) of sodium chloride.

Fully automatic systems can be employed for most business applications requiring ultra-pure water.  However, most businesses opt to use portable exchange tanks for convenience and ease of use. These applications are traditionally found in the form of two offerings:  Two-Bed and Mixed-Bed.

In Two-Bed systems the cation and anion tanks are run in series.  The cation tank removes the positively charged ions (sodium, iron, potassium, magnesium), while the anion tank removes the negatively charged ions (carbonates, nitrates, chlorides).  The strong base variety produce 0.2 megohm water at a pH of between 8-9.  The weak base variety, however, does not remove silica or carbon dioxide (CO2).

Mixed-Bed systems utilize a combination of both cation and anion resin in a single tank.  Ion exchange occurs when water passes through the mixed resin tank or bed.  The water quality rendered by this type of system is approximately around 2.0 megohm or more with a neutral pH.
