These solids can be a combination of dissolved minerals, colloids, organics, particulate matter and silica. The TDS is reduced from a water supply through the use of a semi-permeable membrane where water is forced to flow from a high salinity, or concentrated solution, to the higher purity, or "permeate" stream, on the opposite side of the membrane.
